UpToDate Renewal for 2012

The Library is pleased to announce that the point of care tool UpToDate will be renewed in 2012.  The Library would like to thank the faculty, students, and clinicians for their thoughtful comments during the negotiations period.  The Library would also like to thank Dean Flotte and representatives from the clinical system for their attention to this issue and being available to participate in the difficult contract negotiations.  As a result of their effort and financial commitment, the University, the Clinical System and the Medical Group  have reached a five-year contract with UpToDate.  Expanded services like remote access and CME credit will be implemented in April 2012.  Additional information on the details of these services will be forthcoming.  Please direct specific questions to  Elaine Martin, Director of Library Services.

Journal of eScience Librarianship Launched

We are pleased to announce the publication of the inaugural issue of the Journal of eScience Librarianship, a new online journal published by the Lamar Soutter Library at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.  The Journal of eScience Librarianship is an open access, peer-reviewed journal that advances the theory and practice of librarianship with a special focus on services related to data-driven research in the physical, biological, and medical sciences.  The inaugural issue includes the Proceedings of the Third Annual University of Massachusetts and New England Area Librarian e-Science Symposium held in the Spring of 2011. Feature articles include topics such as DataOne, librarian competencies, and the various levels of data services.

The Journal of eScience Librarianship explores the many roles of librarians in supporting eScience and is currently seeking submissions related to education, outreach, collaborations, current practices, and reviews of relevant resources and tools, by contributors from all areas of the globe. Articles covering both the theoretical and practical applications are welcomed. The Journal of eScience Librarianship also provides special features in each issue which include book reviews on subjects of interest to librarians supporting eScience and information on new technologies.  To read more, including our aims and scope and editorial board membership, please visit our website: http://escholarship.umassmed.edu/jeslib/

Planning a Data Management Curriculum and Requirements for a Collaborative Repository

Recognizing a pressing need for data management education in the sciences, the Lamar Soutter Library at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and the George C. Gordon Library at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) have collaborated on an IMLS National Leadership Planning Grant, “Planning a Data Management Curriculum  and Requirements for a Collaborative Repository,” to develop frameworks for a case based data management curriculum for science, health sciences, and engineering students at undergraduate and graduate levels, and to identify user needs for repository software for storing data sets.

The purpose of this grant has been to develop:

  • a flexible, case based curriculum that teaches data management best practices to students enrolled in a broad range of scientific disciplines
  • an evaluation of user requirements for open source software for storing data generated by student research projects

The libraries have worked with faculty, curriculum, evaluation, and instructional design consultants to develop Frameworks for a Data Management Curriculum , a modular case-based approach for data management instruction. Included in these frameworks are lesson plans for seven course modules, real life research cases, readings, assignments, a simplified data management plan, a prototype of developed content for one module, and assessment questions and answers.  The modular design of the curriculum allows faculty to pick specific course module(s) that are relevant to their courses.   The curriculum could be delivered by faculty or librarians in a variety of ways:  face-to-face classes, as self-paced online modules, or a hybrid format.

The Research Computing and Academic Support Group at WPI conducted testing of three open source software programs to evaluate user requirements for storing data. A summary of the testing process and a matrix of the results of the software testing are available on the project website below the heading “Project Deliverables”.

For further information, contact Donna Kafel, Project Coordinator.

Trials for Three New Online Resources

The Library is currently conducting a trial of BMJ Clinical Evidence, First Consult, and the 5 Minute Clinical Consult; three new clinical information resources.  All three tools are designed to provide quick, evidence-based answers to questions generated at the point-of-care.  BMJ Clinical Evidence contains links to other helpful evidence-based resources provided by the British Medical Journal publishers, while First Consult offers a differential diagnosis tool as well as information on procedures that include some video content.  The 5 Minute Clinical Consult is edited by Dr. Frank Domino of the UMass Department of Family Medicine and Community Health with sections authored by many in the UMMS/UMMHC community.  The library would like your feedback on these three reference tools.  Please direct your comments or questions to Len Levin in the Lamar Soutter Library.
