Changes in Proxy Access – Effective December 19, 2011

On Monday, December 19th, 2011, the Lamar Soutter Library will launch its new proxy service. Proxy is the tool that allows you, the user, to access library resources from off campus using your library barcode. Proxy access is limited to UMMS students, faculty, and staff. Currently, when accessing resources from off-campus, you are prompted to enter your last name and library barcode, and then you are passed through to the resource as an authorized user. On December 19th this process will change. Your login will be your library barcode and your password will be one of your choosing.

There are a few, simple steps you will need to take to activate your barcode and choose a new password in the new system. You can do this now, before the change over, or after the 19th. But, as of Monday the 19th, the old login mechanism will no longer work. For your login to work in the new system you will need to follow these steps:

1. Click on WorldCat Local from the library’s home page.
2. Click on Sign In next to Your library account in the upper right.
3. Click on Forgot Password.
4. Enter your library barcode (use an upper case D).
5. Click on Request Password.
6. You will receive an email with a link. Follow this link to the page where you will input your new password.
7. Enter your barcode once again and choose, then confirm, a password of your choice (password must contain at least one number/character).
8. Click Change Password. The process is now complete.

Your new password will allow you to access your library account immediately (to renew books or to determine what books you have checked out), but you will not use this password for proxy access until December 19. If you want more details, the following tutorial (http://onlinetraining.umassmed.edu/proxy11/) will guide you through the steps. A two-page handout is also available.  If you need additional assistance, please contact the staff at the Library Service Point at 508-856-6099.
